Gameplay

Your journey towards greatness starts in an obscure corner of Roman territory with just some denarii in your pocket - as an ambitious Lanista, your goals are vast: to build and run one of Rome's acclaimed gladiator academies that become globally-famous; earning fame and wealth on one of its grandest stages ever imagined: the Flavian Amphitheater or Colosseum itself is at its core! This game provides an exciting and satisfying loop of strategic management. When approaching the slave market, your task will be to spot potential recruits with "fearless" spirits who might become your future champions. Once recruited, your job as a manager begins. Your gladiators' lives depend upon you, from managing their health care needs and feeding to security. You are solely accountable for their lives - now and for generations after they enter battle!

Train them: Assign your warriors to various training programs--weight lifting yards for Strength training, sparring pits for Agility practice, and long marches as stamina exercises--to create ideal fighting machines.
Equip them: Send your figure(s) off to a blacksmith to be outfitted with historically-based weapons and armor, such as Retiarius' net and trident, or Secutor's massive sword and shield! Are they quick or decisive, agile Retiarii (Retiarii in Latin), armored Secutori, Retiarii with net/trident, or strong Secutores with huge sword/shield combinations?
Manage them. Ensure your gladiators remain healthy, fed well, and in high spirits; an enthusiastic warrior fueled with vitality makes for more potency on the battlefield than one suffering under neglectful care.
Be Prepared: Submit Your Champions To Combat: Enter arenas across your empire with your chosen champions for computer-generated battles to decide the outcome based on preparation, training, equipment, and strategic decisions made during each bout. Your success relies on preparation, training, equipment, and how you utilize them for victory!

Each gladiator you recruit is generated procedurally with their distinct name, backstory, and set of characteristics that affect performance. You could recruit a "Natural Leader", inspiring other fighters around him, and "Arrogant Hotshots", highly skilled yet independent of your orders on the battlefield. As your recruits progress, you will watch them struggle through challenging fights while forging rivalries, turning from "Timid Rookie" to "Battle-Hardened Legend."
An Extensive and Strategic Armory. A gladiator needs equipment. Here, you will discover and unlock an extensive arsenal of authentic Roman gear, providing the tools necessary for crafting various gladiator styles - like that worn by iconic Murmillo wearing his fish-crested helmet; net-and-trident combo with Retiarius or dual sword wielder Dimachaerus with blinding attacks from Andabata; each set up offers its own advantages and disadvantages to prepare fighters best to combat challenges they'll encounter on the field!
